This piglet does not want a bath, and he can back up his argument with the wildest of fantasies and the most persuasive arguments. After all, “pirates...plunder, they pillage, they sail the seas in search of treasure, but they DON’T TAKE BATHS!” Neither do cowboys, Eskimos (it’s too cold to bathe), knights (a knight’s armor might rust), denizens of the desert (where there’s no water), or astronauts (how could you take a bath in zero gravity?). As her child’s imagination takes flight, Mama pig cleverly guides her youngster past his stubborn refusal and visions of a tub-free world as she questions with humor and a practical mind. Would he really want to be an Eskimo and eat whale blubber and walrus liver? Her gentle reasoning leads him to realize that imagination might make even a nightly chore such as bathing fun. Segal’s fanciful cartoon pigs capture the expressions of delight, surprise, and horror as they fill the adventurer’s roles in a succession of little pig’s wild color-washed scenarios. Children and parents alike might recognize these voices heard at the end-of-day bath time in this first-purchase selection for all libraries.

Spoonful of Stories by Cheerios (part 2)

Over the past eight years, Cheerios has given away more than 40 million children's books by distributing them free inside cereal boxes and has donated $3.2 million to First Book, their non-profit partner, which provides books to children from low-income families. The program is part of Cheerios' ongoing commitment to helping parents provide their children with a healthy, nutritional and educational foundation.

Beginning this month, Cheerios is again bringing books to the breakfast table, by providing six million children's books free inside Cheerios boxes. The books are for children ages 3 to 8 years old, and for the first time, all five books have been specially printed in both English and Spanish.

This year's book offerings from Cheerios - all by Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing - are:

Junkyard Fort, written by Jon Scieszka, and illustrated by David Shannon, Tea for Ruby, written by The Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, and illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasse, Ballyhoo Bay, written by Judy Sierra and illustrated by Derek Anderson and What's Under the Bed?, written and illustrated by Joe Fenton, and of course, Sleepyhead, written by Karma Wilson and illustrated by yours truly.

Elizabeth Bird takes a quick look:

I am fond of author/illustrator John Segal. Ever since his The Lonely Moose I've been rather charmed by his gentle watercolors and seemingly effortless style. His newest endeavor Far Far Away! tackles a subject I've not really seen in a picture book before; running away from home. How many can you name? Runaway Bunny doesn't count either. Now Michael Green was, to put it mildly, super enthused about this book. He basically read the whole thing to us, showing us original art from the title, mentioning that Segal was an SCBWI find. Whatever the case, it's pretty cute. Something to look for.

A piglet’s plan to run away gives the familiar home/away/home theme new meaning. After throwing a tantrum in the grocery store, a little pig announces he’s running away from home. His mother calmly mixes a cake and queries where he’s going and how he’ll get there. The little pig defiantly shouts he’s going “far far away” on his bike. His mother omnisciently suggests he’ll need a bike light and helmet as well as tent, sleeping bag and warm coat. As her litany of the pets and toys he’ll want to take grows, the little pig realizes he has everything he needs at home. Pencil-and-watercolor illustrations rely on basic shapes and pale tones to zero in on the little pig’s emotional states as he runs the gamut from mad to mellow. Hilarious scenes of the little pig with his very porcine snout and corkscrew tail anthropomorphically riding in a grocery cart, astride a bike, tucked in a sleeping bag and dwarfed by a parka add layers of humor and charm to this otherwise simple story.
